The latest from the Office for Climate Education

Dear community members,

As the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic continues to impact us all, we would like to wish you good health and inform you of the ongoing actions of the Office for Climate Education.
Like all of you, the OCE had to deal with Covid 19 and adapt its activities. Although some events in France were cancelled or postponed to a future date, it has been a busy year for the OCE. The team is mobilized and most of the projects in progress are moving forward at a steady pace.

The end of this challenging year, is an opportunity for the Office for Climate Education to celebrate all the work done by educators throughout the year who boosted their creativity in order to ensure a pedagogical follow-up for the students.
December is also the occasion to highlight and take stock of the milestones that the OCE has put in place this year, promoting climate change education as an important tool fostering solidarity, intercultural dialogue, peer learning and sustainable development.

 FIELD ACCOMPANIMENT

Despite the health situation and confinement, teaching has never stopped and has been able to reinvent itself to ensure pedagogical continuity during this period of distance learning!

To meet the challenge of pedagogical continuity, the OCE and La main à la pâte have worked together to offer teachers a set of ideas for working on the theme of climate change in pedagogical continuity with primary and secondary school pupils.
The OCE has been able to adjust some of its resources, originally created for a classroom setting, so that they can be use by French speaking teachers with students in a distance learning scenario.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIONS ORGANIZED IN 2020

The on-going sanitary crisis has also had an impact on teacher training activites all around the globe. The OCE knows how essential teachers professional development opporunities are, so...

Once again, adaptation was the watchword and, despite some cancellations, the OCE was able to continue its professional development activity by switching to online training workshops!

  • 3 face-to-face teacher training workshops
= 260 teachers and trainers involved

  • 4 distance teacher training workshops
= around 68 000 teachers and teacher trainers involved

 DEVELOPMENT OF PEDAGOGICAL RESOURCES

True to its mission, the OCE continued producing, throughout the year, diverse pedagogical resources for teachers around the world including : videos, animations, scientific documentation and even another handbook for teachers.

These educational resources are always cost-free, multilingual and royalty-free and will be available soon on our website !

A look back at our November/December highlights:

Classroom tests:

Since the schools remained open in France, the OCE continues to test its classroom ressources, even during lockdown !

In the picture above, Simon Klein, our scientific mediator, went to Daoulas at the middle school of Coat-Mez (Bretagne) to experiment our multimedia animation "carbon cycle" which allows students to calculated their own carbon footprint.

The newspaper "Le Télégramme" followed the test in class;
"In analyzing the results, they discovered that their carbon footprint was not solely related to their individual uses, but was more conditioned by the way our society functions and the existing infrastructure."

Colloquium: "CLIMAT et IMPACTS"

The objective of this conference was to cross-reference scientific expertise on current and past climate variability, its causes, its impacts on ecosystems and its repercussions on past and present human societies.

During this colloquium, a plenary session was dedicated to the theme "transmitting scientific knowledge on climate: education and mediation".

In particular, the OCE was able to present its resources at the roundtable "Climate change education, a training issue for younger people".

Workshop: AREQUIPA 2020

The Office for Climate Education was invited to participate in the international seminar STEAM+H AREQUIPA in Perou.

Through the presentation of the workshops "Ocean and Cryosphere in the context of Climate Change" and "Agriculture and Food", our scientific mediators actively interacted with the training participants who learned how to apply the research approach through the development of experiments and interactive activities that can later be reproduced easily in class (or at home) with their students !

1st Session:
"Ocean and Cryosphere in the Context of Climate Change"

Through OCE interactive activities, participants reflected on the factors that influence sea level...

2th Session:
"Agriculture and Food"

Participants also worked on the study of carbon footprints and impact of their food on climate change...

The OCE team's reading recommendations :

  •  The Malizia #MyOceanChallenge

Inspiring kids with their sailing adventures, protecting the ocean and educating the next generation are particularly important missions for the browsers Pierre Casiraghi and Boris Herrmann. To achieve this goal, the Malizia team are targeting two key areas, science and education.

In order to create future ambassadors for ocean protection, teacher Birte Lorenzen, has designed and tested an educational kit, for children aged 9 to 14, to provide a structured course with the sole purpose of bringing the theme of the oceans to schools around the world and to raise awareness of issues related to the oceans and climate change.

  • Anja Kollmuss & Julian Agyeman, Mind the Gap: Why do people act environmentally and what are the barriers to pro-environmental behavior?, Environmental Education Research

Numerous theoretical frameworks have been developed to explain the gap between the possession of environmental knowledge and environmental awareness, and displaying pro-environmental behavior. Although many hundreds of studies have been undertaken, no denitive explanation has yet been found. This article describes a few of the most influential and commonly used analytical frameworks: early US linear progression models; altruism, empathy and prosocial behavior models; and finally, sociological models

  • Liu, Z., Ciais, P., Deng, Z., Near-real-time monitoring of global CO2 emissions reveals the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nat Commun

The COVID-19 pandemic is impacting human activities, and in turn energy use and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. This article presents daily estimates of country-level CO2 emissions for different sectors based on near-real-time activity data. The key result is an abrupt 8.8% decrease in global CO2 emissions in the first half of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019. The magnitude of this decrease is larger than during previous economic downturns or World War II. By July 1st, the pandemic’s effects on global emissions diminished as lockdown restrictions relaxed and some economic activities restarted but substantial differences persist between countries, with continuing emission declines in the U.S. where coronavirus cases are still increasing substantially
